The Hanover Christmas market takes place annually in the Advent season at several locations in the city of Hanover . The most popular is the historic Christmas market in the old town at the Marktkirche , which now leads from the Leineufer over several streets, the central Kröpcke to Ernst-August-Platz southwest of the main train station . The Christmas market on the Lister Meile is also more recent. The Christmas markets are open from the end of November to December 22nd between 11am and 9pm. The Christmas market includes an oversized Christmas pyramid on the Kröpcke.

history

The Christmas market on the old town square at the Marktkirche probably emerged from weekly markets and has a tradition that began at the end of the 18th century. The market was first mentioned in writing in 1813. Originally it was called the Christmarkt and took place three days before Christmas. Hanoverian address books mentioned around 1900 that only typical Christmas goods and handicrafts were allowed on the market. In 1906 the market was extended to one week, in 1939 to two weeks with approval from outside suppliers. In 1974 the market regulation allowed a three-week market.

From the 1950s onwards, the number of stalls increased and more and more non-Christmas items were offered. Due to constant criticism of the decreasing attractiveness of the market, the number of beverage and snack stands was cut in the 1990s. In addition, the event expanded from the market square to other streets in the historic city center, such as the Holzmarkt and Ballhofplatz . Since then, the Christmas market has also attained a higher level thanks to increased handicraft offers.

In 1994 a Christmas pyramid was built in Georgstrasse as a tourist attraction; it has been replaced by a larger one twice over the years. It is now on the Kröpcke and in 2014, at 18 meters high, was the largest accessible Christmas pyramid in the world.

Old town Christmas market

The traditional old town Christmas market in the historic city center takes place with over 130 stalls (as of 2018) around the market church. Because of the atmospheric ambience in some streets with half-timbered houses , it is a tourist attraction with great appeal. In 2012 it had around 1.8 million visitors. 130 stands were registered for 2015. Together with the foothills in the streets of the Kröpcke there are around 170 stalls.

Today's offer on the market is widely spread and includes not only gastronomy but also Christmas tree decorations, wooden toys and handicrafts. Traditional manufacturing regions for Christmas supplies, such as the Ore Mountains and the Thuringian Forest , are represented on the market . A music program takes place on a stage. Glass blowers, potters and candle makers also present their craft.

The Christmas market extends to Ballhofplatz , where the Finnish Christmas Village is set up. Culinary specialties from Finland and local handicrafts are offered there.

A medieval Christmas village was set up at the Historical Museum . At contemporary market stalls, appropriately dressed sales staff offer goods and gastronomy in the style of the Middle Ages . There are also craft demonstrations, such as forging and felting .

At the Holzmarkt am Leibnizhaus in 2009, a 400 m² forest ( wishing well forest ) was built for the first time with 50 spruces from the Harz and 50 firs , in which there are stalls.

The several hundred meter long Christmas market on the Lister Meile has been held since 1989. In 2008 around 75 stands were represented, in 2015 70 were registered. The market is organized by an advertising association of business owners whose shops are located along the pedestrian zone. The arts and crafts traditionally dominate the stands on the Lister Meile, the usual sausage and mulled wine gastronomy at Christmas markets is strongly underrepresented. A special feature is the puppet theater that takes place three times a day .

More Christmas markets

In addition, there are individual Christmas markets throughout the city in the run-up to Christmas, which usually only take place on one day. The markets in special or historical locations include events at the Lindener Turm , the children's hospital on the Bult , on the Fiedelerplatz , at the Pinkenburg , in the Herrenhausen Gardens , in the Ihme Center , in the Wilhelm Busch Museum and in the Faust cultural center . Christmas markets also take place at churches such as the Bothfelder St. Nicolai Church , the Kirchröder Jacobikirche , the Herrenhausen Church , the Linden Bethlehem Church , the Misburger Johanniskirche , the Luther Church and the Edelhof Chapel .
