English Bicknor Castle is a ruined castle in the village of English Bicknor in the English county of Gloucestershire .

History and construction

The motte was probably built in the 11th century, although some sources assume it was built in the early 12th century.

The mound was in the center of two concentric walls of the outer bailey , so that an approximately circular castle with a diameter of about 135 meters was created. The mound was in the southwest corner of the complex, where the terrain slopes away from the castle. The castle was thus additionally protected against attacks from this side. A stone donjon with a square floor plan could have been built on the mound at a later date and a church was built in the outer bailey.

At the beginning of the Civil War of Anarchy , the castle was under the control of the powerful Miles de Gloucester .

At the end of the civil war, the castle escaped destruction and was still in use at the beginning of the 13th century. At the time it belonged to William Avenel . It is not known when it finally fell into ruin.
