Enric Duran i Giralt (born April 23, 1976 in Vilanova i la Geltrú ) - also known under the name "Robin Banks" or "Robin Hood of the banks" - is an anti-capitalist activist from Catalonia and one of the co-founders of the Cooperativa Integral Catalana (CIC ) , the Internet cooperative FairCoop and the alternative crypto currency FairCoin .

Notoriety

On September 17, 2008, he became famous for the public announcement that he had "stolen" several hundred thousand euros from 39 Spanish banks through unpaid loans and given them to various post-capitalist social movements.

In the free newspaper Crisi , which was distributed all over Catalonia with a circulation of 200,000, and in a personal YouTube video, Duran explains the background to his civil disobedience and how he had to go into hiding abroad as a result:

"I stole 492,000 euros from those who steal the most from us." (Translated)

This was followed in March 2009 by the announcement of another newspaper called Podem (Catalan for We Can ), which had a circulation of 350,000 copies and was distributed throughout Spain in both Catalan and Spanish. In it strategies and ways of building post-capitalist societies are described and put up for debate.

Reasons for acting

With his action Duran intended to launch a broad public debate about the current financial system and capitalism as the dominant economic and social order and to encourage people to rebel against it. With the allocation of the "exempted" funds to alternative, economic models and projects, the economic change should be driven forward. Civil disobedience is a necessary tool for Duran to counteract social and political grievances and he would rather go to prison than give up his conviction.

Reactions from the authorities

In fact, in 2009, shortly after his second newspaper Podem appeared , Duran was arrested by Spanish police and spent two months in prison. Only thanks to the anonymous payment of the bail in the amount of 50,000 euros was he allowed to leave the prison after this time to await his trial. He faces up to eight years in prison. When the trial began in February 2013, however, he had already left Spain in order to continue working on his visions in exile and to support movements that are critical of capitalism and anti-capitalist in other countries.

A campaign was started in 2015 under the hashtag #ReturnWithFreedom to enable Enric Duran to return to Catalonia in the future.

FairCoin

Together with other authors, Enric Duran wrote a white paper on how the alternative cryptocurrency FairCoin (FAIR) works. The goal of FairCoin is to develop a payment method that is stable, global and sustainable. Important values of the FairCoin system are cooperation, ethics, solidarity and transparency. The value of 1 FAIR was 1.20 € on October 16, 2018.

Like other cryptocurrencies (e.g. Bitcoin ), FairCoin is based on blockchain technology. However, unlike other cryptocurrencies, mining is not possible. Instead, around 20 so-called "Collaboratively Validated Nodes" (CVNs) create blocks and secure the network. Their energy consumption is low because they have low infrastructure requirements ( Raspberry3 ). The underlying algorithm , Proof of Cooperation (PoC), was specially developed for FairCoin and enables a system based on cooperation instead of competition. With the introduction of this algorithm on July 18, 2017, the transaction volume was frozen at 53,193,831 FAIR and mining was made impossible, as real goods and services are exchanged using FairCoin.
