Enrico Garzelli (born July 24, 1909 in Livorno ; † July 16, 1992 ) was an Italian rower.

Athletic career

At the European Championships in 1929 , the Italian eighth defended the title from 1927, but the crew of the boat was reassembled with Vittorio Cioni , Enrico Garzelli, Guglielmo Del Bimbo , Roberto Vestrini , Dino Barsotti , Eugenio Nenci , Mario Balleri , Renato Barbieri and helmsman Cesare Milani . In 1930 the boat with the same crew won the silver medal behind the boat from the United States, in 1931 the eighth with Renato Bracci for Vestrini again took second place, this time behind the French.

At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, the eighth competed with Cioni, Balleri, Bracci, Barsotti, Vestrini, Del Bimbo, Garzelli, Barbieri and Milani and received the silver medal behind the US boat. In 1933 the boat with Ottorino Godini and Dante Secchi won European championship silver behind the Hungarian eighth for Vestrini and Cioni.

After Italy had won bronze at the European Championships in 1934 with a completely different crew and there was no medal for Italy in 1935, some of the 1932 crew returned to eight for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin-Grünau and Guglielmo Del Bimbo was the one new batsman. In the line-up of Guglielmo Del Bimbo, Dino Barsotti, Ottorino Quaglierini , Oreste Grossi , Enzo Bartolini , Mario Checcacci , Dante Secchi, Enrico Garzelli and Cesare Milani, the boat took second place behind last year's European champion Hungary. While the boats from the USA, Hungary and Switzerland qualified directly for the finals as preliminary winners, the boats from Germany, Italy and the UK reached the finals as winners of the hope runs. There the favored US boat initially pulled away, in the second section of the route Italians and Germans came up and the three boats reached the destination within a second, the Americans won gold ahead of the Italians and the Germans.

At the European Championships in 1937 , the Italian eighth won the title with Alberto Bonciani , Ottorino Quaglierini, Enzo Bartolini, Dante Secchi, Mario Checcacci, Giovanni Persico , Oreste Grossi, Enrico Garzelli and Cesare Milani. With Dino Cecchi instead of Mario Checcacci, the Italians rowed bronze again behind the eights from Germany and Hungary at the last European Championships before the Second World War in 1938 .

The eighth of the Unione Canottieri Livornesi was Italian champion from 1929 to 1933 and from 1935 to 1938.
