Enrico Poggi (politician)

Enrico Poggi (born July 24, 1812 in Florence , † February 14, 1890 ibid) was an Italian politician of the Risorgimento period .

Poggi completed a law degree and started a civil service career in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany . He rose to the position of Minister of Justice of the Grand Duchy , and then held the same position in the transitional government of Tuscany (April 27, 1859 to March 15, 1860). As such he proclaimed after the plebiscite of 11-12. March 1860 the annexation of Tuscany to the Kingdom of Sardinia . Subsequently, Poggi was minister without a portfolio in the Kingdom of Italy in the first government of Urbano Rattazzi (1862) for a month . He was senator for life from 1860 and later honorary chairman of the Court of Cassation. Poggi successfully advocated the adoption of the abolition of the death penalty from Tuscan criminal law in the Italian Codice Penale. He was the recipient of numerous orders and awards. He was the brother of the architect and town planner Giuseppe Poggi .
