Enrique Gil y Carrasco

Enrique Gil y Carrasco (born July 15, 1815 in Villafranca del Bierzo in the house Calle del Agua No. 15; † February 22, 1846 in Berlin) was a Spanish romantic writer .

His father was the estate manager of the marquis and the monastery of Villafranca.

He began his training in Astorga and switched to studying law first in Valladolid and later in Madrid . There he frequented the most important literary circles. He also used his work as a librarian as research for his historical novels, which are considered to be among the best of their kind in Spain . An excellent example of this is the romantic novel Der Herr von Bembibre , published during his time in Berlin (Spanish edition: see link to Wikisource). Furthermore, he dealt with the Spanish romanticism in publications .

From September 1844 Gil y Carrasco stayed on a diplomatic mission as the embassy secretary in Berlin . He was friends with Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt and received the Great Medal of Merit in gold. A plaque on Gil y Carrasco's former home in Dorotheenstrasse 39 has been commemorating his stay since 2000.

Gil y Carrasco died in Berlin and was buried in the cemetery of the Hedwigsgemeinde . In 1987 his remains were transferred to his hometown.
