Enrique Múgica Herzog (born February 20, 1932 in San Sebastián ; † April 10, 2020 ) was a Spanish politician and lawyer .

Life

Múgica began to be politically active from 1953 against the Francoist regime. He was one of the organizers of the University Congress of Young Writers. In February 1956 he participated in student riots and was imprisoned for three months as a result. His other political activities led him to prison four more times (a total of two and a half years) .

In 1977 he became a member of the Constituent Assembly ( Congreso de los Diputados de la Transición ). Then he was a member of the Congreso de los Diputados , the lower house of the Spanish parliament, until 2000 . During this time he was Minister of Justice from 1988 to March 1991. On June 15, 2000 he was appointed ombudsman ( Defensor del Pueblo ) and held this position until June 30, 2010.

In early April 2020, Múgica died during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain at the age of 88 as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
