The Entenmarkt is a downtown street in Wesel on the Lower Rhine .

location

The duck market is located in the medieval town center and runs in a north-south direction. Contrary to the name, which suggests it was designed as a marketplace, it is a 100-meter-long street. In the north, the street turns into Rheinstraße, which is about as long and leads to Willibrordi Cathedral . To the east and northeast of the Entenmarkt is the Marien-Hospital Wesel complex .

history

The name Entenmarkt is derived from the duck fountain once located there, which was decorated with a picture of a colorful duck. This fountain was located on a small square at the confluence of Rheinstrasse and Kurzen Strasse, which joins to the side. The name Entenmarkt was established not only for this small square, but for the entire street that still exists today. Historically, the street was endangered by flooding from the Rhine and flooded like other parts of the old town in 1783. On January 2 and 3, 1926, the road was again hit by a flood.

From 1802 to 1933, a representative building on the Entenmarkt was used by the local Freemason Lodge . Today it is part of the Marien Hospital complex. In the 1830s Konrad Duden lived with his family for a while at the duck market. The Rheintor city gate was to the south of the street. It was demolished around 1890 as part of the fortification of the former fortress town and gave its name to the Rheintorstrasse, which flows into it today.
