The Marien-Hospital Wesel is a plan hospital in Wesel on the Lower Rhine . It has 15 specialist departments and 424 beds.

history

The previous institution of the hospital was a charity founded in 1844 by 26 Catholics from Wesel. This association used a house on Feldstrasse, today's Pastor-Janßen-Strasse in Wesel city center, to care for the sick. The association still exists today under the name “Verein Marien-Hospital Wesel”. On September 8, 1858, nuns from Münster arrived in Wesel to care for the sick. From then on, the name Marien Hospital was used. In 1878 the first operations were performed in the hospital. In February 1945 the hospital was destroyed by air raids during World War II.

In 1947 a first part of the building was reopened. The first of several retirement homes was set up in 1977 by the hospital's owner. In the course of time, the hospital was expanded to include various specialist departments, and in the 1980s surgery was differentiated into several specialist departments. In 2003, the holding association and the St. Willibrordus Foundation of the Emmerich Hospital founded the “pro Homine” holding as the new sponsor of the hospital and the associated senior citizens' homes. At the beginning of the 21st century, several building projects were also carried out and the hospital expanded. This also included the House of Health, which opened in 2010, with specialists attached to the hospital. The new intensive care unit was opened in 2017. As a national and international reference hospital there, the Marien Hospital has been using innovative lighting technology for delirium prevention in patient care since 2019. It simulates the natural day-night rhythm to avoid confusion.
