Historical representation of the square with cathedral and town hall (1852)

The Great Market is a centrally located square in the Wesel city center. It is the location of the Willibrordi Cathedral and the city's historic town hall . A weekly market takes place twice a week.

Location and development

The Große Markt is located in the inner city of Wesel at the western end of the pedestrian zone, which ends on the other side at the Berliner Tor . The federal highway 8 runs around 200 meters west of the square and on the other side there is the Rhine promenade and the port area . Almost directly to the north is the Kornmarkt , which is characterized by restaurants and bars.

The Willibrordi Cathedral, completed in 1540, is located on the west side of the Great Market, but access to the church is not on this side of the building. In the south there is a four-storey building from the early 1990s, into which the facade of the historic town hall, completed in 2011, is integrated. The north side is built on by a row of houses from the 1950s and in the east there is a large commercial building on the other side of Dimmerstrasse, which passes there. Several bus routes stop at the edge of the large market and there is an underground car park there.

history

One and a half centuries after the city was granted city rights, the city's first town hall was built on the Great Market Square in 1390. In 1391 the square in front of it was paved. The town hall building was demolished as early as 1455 because it was not considered representative enough in Wesel, which had belonged to the Hanseatic League since 1407 , and also took up too much space on the market. Then the historic town hall of Wesel was built in the Flemish style, which existed until 1945 and whose facade was reconstructed until 2011. The wealth of the Wesel merchants flowed into the building. The cathedral was also completed in 1540, so that the Great Market with the town hall, cathedral and weekly market has been the center of the city ever since. For example, the main guard of the Spanish troops was there when they occupied Wesel in the early 17th century.

In the Second World War , Wesel was badly damaged, which also affected the Great Market. The town hall was completely destroyed, parts of the cathedral were still standing. In 1946 the decision was made to rebuild the town hall at the same location, but in 1949 a different location in the Wesel city center was chosen. In general, the southern row of houses was initially not rebuilt and the space in this area remained undeveloped. From 1951 to 1966 the Wesel – Rees – Emmerich small railway ran right past the Großer Markt. From 1973 the axis between the market square and the Berliner Tor, which had been navigable until then, was redesigned into a pedestrian zone. A citizens' initiative founded in 1986 collected money from 2003 for the reconstruction of the historic town hall facade, which was completed in 2011.

Events

Various events will take place on and around the Great Market. Twice a week (Wednesdays and Saturdays) there is a weekly market there and across to the neighboring Kornmarkt. With mostly over 30 stalls, it is the largest market in the area. There are also annual events, such as the Advent market on the first weekend in Advent. This is carried out in addition to the regular Christmas market. The square is also part of the Wesel Culture Night program every year .
