Wesel Culture Night
The Weseler Kulturnacht is a cultural event that takes place annually on the third Saturday in September in Wesel on the Lower Rhine.
Story and concept
In 2002, the culture night was held for the first time as part of the nationwide campaign "Off to the middle - the City-Offensive NRW". It has been held annually since then, and the scope of the event has grown significantly over the years. During the Culture Night, a number of individual events and exhibitions are organized that are spread across the entire city center and take place both outdoors and indoors. One focus is the cultural center at the Wesel Citadel , where the Prussian Museum , the Music and Art School and the Wesel City Archives offer a program and the outdoor area is also integrated into the cultural night. There is also a high density of events on Stettiner Straße, which connects the citadel and the city center. In the city area, the Willibrordi Cathedral , the Municipal Theater and the Scala Kulturspielhaus serve as event locations. Between the citadel and the Großer Markt , the location of the cathedral, a connection leading, among other things, via Stettiner Straße is illuminated with around 1,000 candles every year. The cultural night program starts around noon and continues into the night. The participants include in particular regional artists and musicians, but also schools in Wesel.
In 2014, on the same date, a children's culture night was held for the first time in Wesel's city center, which has since taken place annually as a supplement to the culture night. The impetus for this was that the date of the Culture Night 2014 fell on September 20 and thus on World Children's Day . Contrary to the name, the events of the Children's Culture Night start in the morning and focus on the afternoon. The event is aimed at children of different age groups and is also supported by various institutions.
