Benzyl violet 4B is a chemical compound of sodium from the group of triphenylmethane dyes .
Extraction and presentation
Benzyl violet 4B can be prepared by condensation of 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde with α- ( N -ethylanilino) -4-toluenesulfonic acid , followed by oxidation and conversion to the sodium salt. It is also possible to prepare it by condensing α- ( N -ethylanilino) -3-toluenesulfonic acid with formaldehyde and oxidation in the presence of N , N -dimethylaniline .

Benzyl violet 4B was used as the dye. It was used as a food and cosmetic dye until 1973, then for dyeing textiles and as a printing ink.
