The music and art school has been located in the building of barracks VIII, which makes up the east wing of the Wesel citadel, since 1991. The building was erected in 1809 under French rule. It is separated from the western part of the citadel with the Prussian Museum Wesel , the Wesel city archive and the main gate building of the citadel by Bundesstrasse 58 (Schillstrasse), which runs between the buildings. However, the music and art school is accessible via a small side street, which is why it has the address An der Zitadelle 13 .

In the core area, the school has around 900 students. In addition, there are cooperations with local schools, including elementary schools, which means that the total number of students is around 1,200. 35 teachers work at the school. The music school offers learning a variety of instruments. There are also offers such as the children's choir, ballet lessons and a musical-music theater. They are financed partly by income and to a greater extent by municipal grants.

history

In March 1969 the establishment of the school was made possible by a resolution of the Wesel City Council. Since it was aimed solely at children and young people, it was then called the Youth Music and Art School. It was the first institution in West Germany with a dual function as a music and art school. The school was organized as a registered association and could initially only be financed by private donations without public subsidies. As early as 1970 it had 436 students, all of whom were taught by teachers who worked part-time. The lessons took place in different places, including in the grain magazine in the western part of the citadel, today's Prussia Museum. The municipal theater and the school premises were also used by the youth music and art school. From 1974 it was permanently housed in the main gate building of the citadel, which is located adjacent to the Körnermagazin in the western part of the citadel. In 1977 the previously privately organized association became the sponsorship of the city. This decision was controversial in public. After another change of premises, the school has been housed in the barracks VIII building in the eastern part of the citadel since 1991. In 2004 the courses were also opened to adults and the name was changed from youth music and art school to music and art school.
