Gabriela Farnese is a famous singer who is currently traveling the seas on a large passenger steamer. The luxury liner berths for one night in the port of the Indian city of Bombay . Accompanied by the poet Tossi, she goes ashore there to look for a mysterious doppelganger, the dancer Concha. Gabriela has heard that they supposedly give their performances in an Indian tea house. In front of the establishment, Gabriela is kidnapped by a sinister fellow. Concha's friend came up with the idea of ​​kidnapping Gabriela because of her resemblance to Concha in order to exchange them for each other. Concha is wanted for murder, and she is now supposed to assume Gabriela's identity, while the singer is unceremoniously let disappear into an underground vault.

Tossi, who had been stopped by the villain, notices that Gabriela is no longer Gabriela, but the wanted Concha and alerts the police. Meanwhile, Concha has used the opportunity to smuggle himself onto the ocean liner in Gabriela's place in order to be able to leave the country unnoticed. Tossi, who tries to free and save Gabriela himself, is killed. But the police have long since smelled the roast and freed Gabriela with the help of the English Lord Pombroke. A little later, the police can bring the murderous doppelganger to justice, before she can manage to leave India forever with the departing ship.

Production notes

The Secret of Bombay , sometimes with the subtitle The Adventure of a Night , was created in the Bioscop studio in Neubabelsberg , passed film censorship on December 21, 1920 and was banned from young people. The premiere took place on January 6, 1921 in Berlin's marble house. The length of the strip was 1,670 meters, divided into five acts.

The two stars of the film, Dagover and Veidt, had worked for the same production company in the expressionist masterpiece Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari stood in front of the camera. The two Caligari film architects Robert Herlth and Walter Röhrig were used again for this production. Rudolf Meinert was the production manager.
