The Entertainment Software Rating Board , or ESRB for short , is a subordination of the Entertainment Software Association . It was founded in 1994 and evaluates computer games according to their suitability for children and adolescents in the USA and Canada , similar to the USK in Germany or the European PEGI system, but with the difference that this is a pure self-regulation device of the computer game industry without legally binding . A game is rated on a voluntary basis by the publisher , but almost all games are rated due to pressure from retailers and console manufacturers .
