The theft and the crash of a De Havilland DHC-8-400 with the air vehicle registration N449QX of Horizon Air caused on August 10, 2018 Richard Russell, a dispatcher of Horizon Air. He started at the Seattle Center with no pilot's license or corresponding permission and flew the stolen aircraft performed several aerobatic maneuvers within 70 minutes . After just a few minutes, F-15 fighter planes had taken up the chase with the order to push the machine off to the open sea. After problems with one of the two engines, probably due to a lack of fuel, he crashed on Ketron Island , an island in Puget Sound , and had a fatal accident. On August 13, 2018, the flight recorder was recovered by the FBI .

The 29-year-old was previously considered to be mentally ill and was described by the sheriff of the responsible Pierce County as "suicidal". He himself had stated that he did not want to hurt anyone.

The FBI investigation in November 2018 led to the result that the machine was deliberately steered to the ground in the final phase of flight. According to the FBI, the pilot acted alone and without a terrorist background, so it is a pilot suicide .
