Eochaid (Scotland)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eochaid (also written Eochu or Eochaidh ) was the Scottish king from 878 to 889 and ruled together with Giric . He was the nephew of his predecessor Aedh and the cousin of his successor Donald II.

Eochaid was not eligible to ascend the Scottish throne according to the Tanistry system because he was descended from the daughter of the royal line. However, since he had ambitions for the title of king, he allied himself with Giric in order to forcibly oust his uncle Aedh from power. When he was king himself, however, he had to share control of Scotland with Giric. It can be assumed that the two did not have a good relationship with each other.

It is believed that Eochaid used his cousin Donald's services to get rid of Giric. But Donald ascended the throne himself in 889 and forced Eochaid to go into exile . The date and place of Eochaid's death are unknown.

Despite the limited information available, it is certain that Eochaid was the first to grant the Scottish Church independence from the state. The Church had previously been subject to the laws and regulations of the Picts .
