Web (formerly Epiphany ) is a free web browser . It emerged from Galeon and is now the official browser of the Gnome project.

Web is published under the GNU General Public License (GPL). Since 2009 he has been using WebKit , the rendering engine of Safari and other browsers, to display websites .

The aim of the developers is to create a browser with a user interface that is as simple as possible, which adheres to the Human Interface Guidelines (HIG) of the GNOME project, is integrated into the Gnome desktop environment and complies with the relevant standards.

particularities

Like Galeon and most other browsers, Web supports tabbed browsing , cookie management and has a pop-up blocker . An ad blocker is also included.

Galeon also adopted the concept of smart bookmarks . Smart bookmarks are bookmarks that receive an argument from a text field or from the address bar and integrate this into the URL called up . This allows the user to use the search function of a website, for example, without having to load it first.

Probably the most striking feature of the web is the organization of bookmarks. In contrast to most other browsers, which organize bookmarks according to hierarchies, bookmarks in web are assigned topics. Any number of topics can be assigned to the bookmark. When entering in the address line, bookmarks are displayed whose title or URL begin with the letters entered, as well as bookmarks whose associated topics begin with the entry.

Similar to Firefox , web extensions support, with which, for example, control with mouse gestures is possible.

Application starters can be created for frequently used websites. The websites can be called up like normal desktop applications . Such a page is started in a separate window without the browser controls.

history

Web was originally created in 2002 under the name Epiphany as a spin-off from the Galeon project. Version 1.0 was released on September 9, 2003. Since Gnome 2.4 (September 11, 2003) Epiphany was the official web browser of the Gnome project. On October 22, 2005 it was announced that Galeon will no longer be developed, but that its special features will be taken over as extensions in Epiphany.

As of version 2.19.6 (July 30, 2007), Epiphany offered experimental support for WebKit as a rendering engine in addition to Mozilla's Gecko . In April 2008, the Epiphany developers decided to rely entirely on WebKit. They justify this step with the more clearly structured, more stable programming interface and shorter publication cycles of WebKit (than Mozilla's XULRunner / Gecko). In the transition phase from version 2.19.6 to 2.28, both rendering engines could be used . As of September 21, 2009 (version 2.28), Webkit is the only rendering engine used .

Together with GNOME 3, the developers released version 3.0 on April 6, 2011. The user interface has been revised and has been using GTK + 3 since then . In the following versions, the browser was further integrated into the Gnome shell . Since March 28, 2012 (version 3.4), the browser within the desktop environment is only called the web browser .

Epiphany 3.24 was released in March 2017.
