The Epplehaus is a self-managed youth center on Karlstrasse in Tübingen . The youth center was named in memory of 17-year-old Richard Epple, who was shot and killed by the police in a 1972 car chase .

history

In April 1972 the Schwabenhaus youth club in Tübingen burned down due to unexplained circumstances. When demands to investigate the cause of the fire and to renovate the Schwabenhaus were not met, young people occupied an empty bank building in Karlstrasse in June 1972 after a concert by Ton Steine Scherben . In July 1972 the city of Tübingen acquired the building from the Kreissparkasse Tübingen and made it available for youth work. Initially, the center was administered by the Tübingen City Youth Department. In 1978 the sponsoring association Jugendzentrum Epplehaus eV was founded. After the association had been supported by social pedagogues for a long time, the youth center has been run by around 30 youths and young adults on a voluntary basis since 2004. The women's café moved into the women's project building. The city operates the youth media café and the youth culture office on one floor.

The concerts in the vaulted cellar made the Epplehaus a well-known institution beyond the region. From rock to punk, metal, reggae or hardcore, all genres and many famous bands have been represented in the history of the house.
