Erasto Bartholomeo Mpemba (* 1950 ) is a Tanzanian scientist who rediscovered the Mpemba effect , named after him, while still at school , a paradoxical phenomenon in which hot water freezes faster than cold water under certain conditions. In 1963 he discovered the phenomenon in the preparation of ice cream . The correctness of his observations has been proven experimentally.

During his studies at the College of African Wildlife Management near Moshi , he published a treatise on the phenomenon together with Denis G. Osborne in 1969. He later worked in the Department of Natural Resources and Tourism in the Wildlife Division. Today he is retired.
