Ercole Ricotti

Ercole Ricotti (born October 12, 1816 in Voghera , † February 24, 1883 in Turin ) was an Italian historian and politician .

Ercole Ricotti first studied mathematical and technical sciences, then history in Turin. Because of his work on the history of mercenary companies in Italy ( Storia delle compagnie di ventura in Italia ) on intervention by Cesare Balbo in 1846, he became professor of modern history (originally military history) at the University of Turin . He took part as a captain in the Genie Corps in the war against Austria in 1848, during which time he was captured by Austria .

Ricotti was a member of the Sardinian Chamber of Deputies since 1848 and of the Italian Senate since 1862 . Also in 1862 he was appointed Rector of the University of Turin and in 1878 President of the Academy of Sciences in Turin , of which he had been a member since 1840. After he had stopped his lectures at the university in 1882 due to illness, he died on February 24, 1883 at the age of 66 in Turin.
