Surface intensities

The 2019 Ambon earthquake occurred in Indonesia on September 26, 2019 at 8:46 a.m. local time and had a magnitude of 6.5 M w on the moment-magnitude scale . According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), its epicenter was in the sea between the Moluccas islands Seram and Ambon .

Tectonic background

The epicenter identified by USGS is 11 kilometers south of the city of Kairatu and 30 kilometers northeast of the city of Ambon . The Indonesian Geophysics Agency BMKG locates the epicenter about 12 kilometers further east on Seram Island. BMKG initially stated the magnitude as 6.8, but later corrected it to 6.5 M w . The quake was felt by approximately 650,000 people at an intensity of V or higher on the Modified Mercalli Scale.

According to USGS calculations, the hypocenter of the quake was at a depth of 12.3 kilometers, BMKG specifies a focus depth of 10 kilometers.

According to the BMKG, the quake was the result of a leaf shift . The fault line had not yet been mapped. There was no risk of a tsunami . There were numerous aftershocks, the strongest of which with a magnitude of 5.6 M w . By installing eleven additional seismographs , the tectonic processes in the region will be investigated in more detail.

Victims and damage

According to the Indonesian civil protection agency BNPB , 41 people were killed in the quake and 1,578 were injured. Around 170,000 people had to be quartered in emergency shelters.

For fear of aftershocks and because rumors of an allegedly imminent major quake and tsunami were circulating, many people did not return to their homes for days. As a result, the number of people counted as homeless rose temporarily to over 240,000 on September 29.

8,753 buildings were damaged by the quake. The bridge over the Bay of Ambon showed cracks in the asphalt, but according to the responsible authorities, it is only superficial damage to the surface over expansion joints . The bridge was not closed. The earthquake caused landslides and soil liquefaction in the village of Liang in the northeast of Ambon Island .

Another person was killed in an aftershock with a magnitude of 5.0 MW on October 10th. In a further aftershocks of magnitude 5.0 M w November 12 were two people killed.

Social Affairs Minister Agus Gumiwang promised financial support to the families of the victims and the businesses damaged by the quake.
