Isabel Díaz Ayuso (born October 17, 1978 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician of the Partido Popular (PP) . Since August 19, 2019, she has been the seventh President of the Regional Government of the Autonomous Community of Madrid .

biography

Díaz Ayuso grew up in the Chamberí district of Madrid . She has a brother and is a Catholic. Ayuso studied Journalism and Political Communication at the Complutense University of Madrid . She then worked for various radio stations and newspapers. She has also worked as a journalist in Spain, Ecuador and Ireland .

Díaz Ayuso was responsible for the online election campaign of the former Regional President of Madrid, Cristina Cifuentes . In addition, she has been working for the PP in the online area since 2008. Díaz Ayuso was elected to the regional parliament of Madrid in 2011 for her party.

Election of regional president

After the PP crashed to 22.2% of the vote in the regional elections in Madrid in May 2019, the party nevertheless started coalition talks with the Ciudadanos parties and the right-wing extremist Vox . The talks between the conservative associations were successful, as various political demands on the part of the Vox were accepted by the other parties. The agreement with which Díaz Ayuso was ultimately elected as the new regional president of Madrid was the third of its kind between the PP, Ciudadanos and Vox after the elections in Andalusia and Murcia .

Regional President Díaz Ayuso scheduled new elections for May 4 in the Madrid region in March 2021, ostensibly to forestall a vote of no confidence in her. According to surveys, she, who had positioned herself against Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez (PSOE), could count on becoming the strongest force with the PP and being able to form a government with the Vox. Regarding the collaboration with Vox, which most observers classify as fascist, she openly stated: “I have no problems making a pact with Vox. What if they call you a fascist ? Then you are on the right side of the story. "

Political positions

Díaz Ayuso is considered to be close to the conservative politicians Pablo Casado , Esperanza Aguirre and José María Aznar and is less critical of the right-wing populist party Vox than ex-Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy did. Furthermore, she has shown herself to be friendly to the State of Israel in the past . She rejects feminist positions and the right to abortion .

Díaz Ayuso repeatedly denied the health effects of pollution (especially from traffic), so she said in a radio interview: «Nadie ha muerto de esto [contaminación]. No quiero que se genere una alarma de salud pública porque no la hay »(German:“ Nobody died from it. I don't want to call a public health alarm because it doesn't exist ”). Scientists and health experts strongly disagreed with this statement, stating that around 10,000 people die of environmental pollution in Spain every year. Due to very loose rules to contain the Covid-19 pandemic - restaurants, pubs, cinemas, museums and other leisure facilities remained open - at the beginning of 2021 she advanced to "the heroine of restaurateurs, entrepreneurs and the party crowd", as dpa said wrote.
