Esperanza Aguirre
Esperanza Aguirre y Gil de Biedma (born January 3, 1952 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician. She was President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid from 2003 to 2012 and Chair of the Partido Popular Madrid from 2004 to 2016 . She resigned in 2016 due to the corruption incidents in her party.
Career
After studying law, Aguirre first embarked on a civil service career before becoming Minister of Education and Science (1996-1999) under the first government of José María Aznar . From 1999 to 2002 she was the first (and so far only) President of the Senate of Spain. From 2003 she was President of the Autonomous Region of Madrid ; in September 2012 she resigned for health reasons. In 2004 she became chairwoman of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) in the Madrid region.
In March 2015, she was put up as the PP's candidate for the post of mayor of Madrid for the local elections to be held at the end of May 2015, but lost just short of Manuela Carmena , who was nominated by the left-wing parties PSOE and Podemos .
On February 14, 2016, Esperanza Aguirre resigned from her post as President of the PP of the Madrid Autonomous Region due to the serious corruption allegations against the party. At a press conference, she explained her step u. a. with the following words: "I spoke to Rajoy and he understands this step. Corruption is killing us all. People don't want more, people want gestures and my gesture means that I take political responsibility. I wanted Francisco Granados as Secretary General of the Madrid PP and the fact that he is still in jail means that he did something serious. I am not the main culprit but I have political responsibility. "
On April 24, 2017, Esperanza Aguirre resigned from her remaining offices as spokeswoman for the Partido Popular in Madrid City Hall and as councilor. The reason given was that she felt "deceived and betrayed" by her right-hand man, Ignacio González, because of his involvement in the corruption scandal and the embezzlement of public funds in connection with Operation Lezo .
Private
As Countess of Bornos and Grande de España , she belongs to the Spanish nobility . She is married and has two grown children.
