The Jericho earthquake hit Palestine and Transjordan on July 11, 1927 at 3:08 pm local time. The epicenter was north of the Dead Sea in the Jordan Trench . As a result, there was great destruction in the cities of Jerusalem , Jericho , Ramallah , Tiberias and Nablus and around 500 people were killed.
During the quake, the western plate shifted to the south and the eastern plate to the north, within a very short time by around 50 cm against each other.

The tower of the Church of the Assumption in Jerusalem had to be shortened by approx. 10 m after the earthquake.
The grave of Christ in the Church of the Holy Sepulcher had to be secured with iron until its renovation in March 2017.
