The Erg Tifferine (also Erg Tifernine or Issaouane n'Tifferine ) is a sandy desert ( Erg ) of the Sahara in the southern Algerian province of Illizi .

topography

With an area of around 4800 km², the Erg TIFFENINE is an offshoot of the significantly larger Erg Issaouane , which adjoins it to the east, and is connected to it via a narrow passage about 16 km wide.

The Erg Tifferine has a characteristic amphora shape , which is why it is easy to identify on satellite images. In north-south direction, it stretches over 150 km in length, the maximum width is 47 km. In the southwest, south and east the Erg is framed by the westernmost foothills of the Tassili n'Ajjer Mountains . In the northeast it continues in the Erg Issaouane. The north-western border is formed by the wide Oued Igharghar .

The frame and the solid rock base of the Erg Tifferine have heights of 400 to 530  m . The dunes built above are the highest in the entire Sahara and reach heights of up to 420 m. The highest dune ridges are at 870  m . Within the erg there are numerous deep depressions ( sebkhas ) without sand cover, the height of which corresponds to that of the framing of the erg. From this it can be seen that there are no protrusions of the solid ground beneath the sand dunes of the Erg Tifferine.

Settlement

There are no settlements or traffic routes within the Erg. The Gräberfeld slope runs along the east side of Erg Tifferine .

In the southern part of Erg individual found on the bedrock base of Sebkhas cairns as witnesses of a Neolithic settlement.

vegetation

With the exception of a few trees in the Sebkhas, the Erg TIFFENINE is completely without vegetation.
