The Erg Tihodaïne (also Erg Tihodaine ) is a small sandy desert ( Erg ) of the Sahara in the border area of ​​the southern Algerian provinces of Djanet and Illizi .

topography

The Erg Tihodaïne has an almost round shape and covers an area of ​​about 1000 km². The diameter is around 45 km. The northeast part of the Erg is called Erg Timezzouatine. In the northeast of Erg adjacent to the to the westernmost foothills of the Tassili n'Ajjer mountains belonging Tin Haberti -Gebirge. The wide plain of the Oued Amadror runs to the west . In the southeast is the small mountain group of Djebel Ounane.

The frame and the bedrock base of Erg Tihodaïne have heights of around 1100  m . The dunes built above reach heights of up to 260 m. The highest dune ridges are at 1430  m . In the center of the Erg the solid rock base rises up as a mountain group up to 1590  m high, in the sand-free frame of which the 10 km long Oued Eguiornenhel ends in a drainless depression ( Sebkha ).

Settlement

There are no settlements within the Erg. The small northeastern oasis town of Tamdjert is 40 km away.

In the area of ​​the rocky outcrops within the Erg there are numerous barrows (mostly round graves , but also keyhole graves ) as evidence of a Neolithic settlement.

vegetation

With the exception of a few shrubs and a few trees in the central Sebkha, the Erg Tihodaïne is completely without vegetation.

traffic

There are no traffic routes within the erg. In the south it is bypassed by the Amguid - Afara - Djanet piste . This slope is currently being expanded.
