Eric Abbott

Eric Oscar Abbott (also: Eric O. Abbott and Dr. Eric Abbott ; born August 4, 1929 in St. John's , Newfoundland , Canada ; † February 9, 1988 in St. John's) was a Canadian conductor, pianist, organist, cornetist , Composer and arranger.

Life

Eric Oscar Abbott's father was Major Robert Abbott. Eric studied music at Prince of Wales College in St. John's with Douglas Osmond. In 1952 he earned the title of Bachelor of Music and in 1956 the title of Master of Music from Acadia University. He obtained his doctorate in Music Education in 1969 from Boston University . Eric Abbott's teachers included Edwin Collins (* 1893), Janis Kalejs (1912–1973), Hugo Norden (1912–1973) and Gardner Read . He wrote his doctoral thesis on The evolution of the Canadian festival movement as an instrument of music education . In 1948 he began teaching music in various schools in St. John's. From 1968 he led the band of the Avalon Consolidated School Board. Since 1949 several concerts with Abbott as pianist, organist and cornetist have been broadcast on the radio. He arranged choral works and was music director at CJON-Radio and CJOX-TV. He led Salvation Army bands in St. John and Massachusetts and became the director of the Booth Memorial Brass Band in 1968 . After suffering from Menière's disease, he had to give up his full-time work as a music teacher in 1983. Worked at the Salvation Army Training College , Elim Pentecostal Tabernacle and the Salvation Army Cadet's Band . He continued to give private lessons and led the Silver Chords , a senior choir.
