Born as Volker Päutz, he was a boy member of the Leipzig St. Thomas Choir . During his school days, Eric Thomas was a member of a beat band with whom he also played his own songs and made five records. This was followed by a two-year study of music in Saarbrücken (piano, guitar, trumpet). Thomas himself wrote many texts in German, French, English and Italian and also composed. His producer at the time was Horst-Heinz Henning . There were 32 Eric Thomas Fan Clubs.
In 1969 he was a participant in the hit festival Festivalul De Muzică Ușoară in Romania with the title Che Bello È by Ana Aldea-Ciocan and Ion Vasilescu . In 1970 he appeared twice in the ZDF hit parade . At the German Schlager Competition in 1970 on June 4, 1970, Eric Thomas sang himself in 6th place with starting place 6 and the title Tears dry quickly in the sunshine .
