from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Erich Pohl (* 1904 as Alfred Erich Pohl ; † 1968 in Dresden ) was together with Erich Höhne one of the most important photojournalists in GDR history for Dresden and the Saxony area .

Life

Pohl lived in Dresden from 1934 and worked in the editorial department of the daily newspaper Dresdner Anzeiger until 1942 . His job title picture reporter first appeared in the Dresden address book from 1943/44. As early as 1930 he met Richard Peter and Erich Höhne , his future partner. With this he not only shared common photographic interests, but also political views and social activities. As a documentarist from the very beginning, he began his photo reporter activity with Höhne in June 1945 . On behalf of Dresden daily newspapers, the state administration of Saxony and supraregional from Zentralbild Berlin (Zentrale Bildstelle GmbH), an extensive photo documentation was created that documented the reconstruction of Dresden after its destruction in World War II in new series or depicted annual political events and cultural highlights. In 1968 Pohl died in Dresden.

Today it is hardly possible to determine which of the pictures by Höhne and Pohl actually belong to Erich Pohl, unless both photographers worked on the documentation of an event at the same time and put each other into the picture. A large part of the photo collection, however, comes from Erich Höhne (1912–1999) - Pohl was mainly responsible for business.

The Deutsche Fotothek acquired the Höhne / Pohl archive in 1992. With around 260,000 small picture and 100,000 medium format negatives, over 3,000 color slides in 6 × 6 cm format and numerous positives, it is the most extensive, fully acquired picture archive of the Deutsche Fotothek, whose negative inventory is part of a project in the University and Science Program (HWP) of the Federal State Commission for Educational Planning and Research Funding has been digitized across the board .
