Erich Tesch (born July 20, 1902 in Roga , † October 10, 1967 in Haldensleben ) was a fatality on the inner-German border .

Life

Tesch, who lives in a homeless shelter in Cologne, wanted to move to the GDR, where three of his children lived. Therefore, in the early morning of October 10, 1967, drunk, he went to the Helmstedt-Marienborn border crossing and asked to be admitted to the GDR. Because he was drunk, he was sent back with the advice that he should come back sober in the evening. Since he did not want to wait until evening, Tesch climbed over the border fence around 10:15 a.m. and immediately stepped on a mine that tore off his left lower leg and inflicted various injuries. He was recovered around 11:25 a.m. and taken to the Haldensleben hospital, where he died that evening.

At the end of the 1990s, the Magdeburg public prosecutor charged the former GDR commanders Major General Harald B. and Major Horst M. with the death of Erich Tesch and other mine victims. B. was in charge of the minefields in the border area near Marienborn as head of the 7th border brigade and M. as company commander of their pioneer brigade. B's case of multiple incitement to manslaughter was dropped because the defendant was declared incapable of standing. The Magdeburg regional court sentenced Horst M. to a two-year suspended sentence for manslaughter.
