Erik Puke

Erik Nilsson Puke († February 1437 ) was the son of the Swedish Imperial Council and knight Nils Gustafsson . The first time he was mentioned was his father's official in charge of the Korsholms län district . In 1435 he had the Rasbo district (Rasbo härad) as a pawn and was also the commander of Kastelholm Castle . The nickname Puke probably comes from his mother's cousin, Erik Kettillson Puke.

Erik Puke allied himself very early on with the leader of the Engelbrekt uprising , Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson , whose closest confidante he was from 1436. After Engelbrektsson passed away, Erik Puke initiated another uprising, the so-called Puke feud . The uprising quickly spread across the country. Especially in the region of Närke and Västmanland , where the population quickly sided with Erik Puke. After negotiations with the bailiff of Dalarna , Hans Mårtensson , Erik Puke succeeded in getting a peasant army out of Dalarna against Stockholm . King Erik VII met with the insurgents in Haraker in Västmanland. Nevertheless, there were some minor clashes between the people of Erik Puke and those of the king at the battle of Hällaskogen . After this battle an armistice was decided and negotiations were held in Västerås at the same time .

Instead of an amicable solution, Hans Mårtensson was executed at the meeting and Erik Puke was transferred to Stockholm as a prisoner. There he was also executed at the beginning of February 1437.

Erik Puke was married to Brigitta Nilsdotter Hammerstaatten and had a son Gustav Puke with her.
