Erika Wahlbrink began her training as a hairdresser in 1965, and when she received her journeyman's certificate, she completed her training in 1968. She passed her master's examination in 1973. In 1976 she opened her first own barber shop in Ibbenbüren. Wahlbrink's team successfully took part in hairdressing championships in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony and Bremen over the next few years. Further successes at national and international level were:

  • 1996 Award of the health prize awarded for the first time by the entire German trade
  • In 2003 a member of the team became a German master in hairdressing

  • 2008 Participation in the world championship of hairdressing in Chicago, the team around Wahlbrink became world champions in the men's design discipline

In February 1981 she opened the still existing hairdresser "Haar & Design Wahlbrink" in Ibbenbüren, which she ran until 2012. Your colleague Tanja Hartmann, geb. Piontek, took over the business in 2012 and has been running it ever since.

voluntary work

Erika Wahlbrink has been involved in professional craft organizations since 1985. In 1982 she was elected head of the advisory board of the Tecklenburger Land hairdressing guild. This was the beginning of a voluntary commitment:

Wahlbrink was unanimously elected deputy head master of the Tecklenburger Land hairdressing guild in 1988, and from 1996 to 2015 she was head master of the Steinfurt guild. After 20 years at the helm of the guild, she decided not to run again in 2015. In the same year she was elected Honorary Master.

In 2006 she was elected deputy district master craftsman of the district craftsman's association Steinfurt-Warendorf, from 2007 to 2012 she took over the office of second district master craftsman, from 2012 to 2017 she was the sole district master craftsman in office.

From 1988 to 1996 she was a delegate of the state association of hairdressers in North Rhine-Westphalia.

From 1997 to 2005 she was a member of the board and the economic and social committee of the state association of hairdressers in North Rhine-Westphalia.

From 2001 to 2017 Erika Wahlbrink was an honorary judge at the Rheine Labor Court.

From 2009 to 2019 she was elected to the general assembly of the Münster Chamber of Crafts.

  • 2005 Golden Needle of the State Hairdressing Association of North Rhine-Westphalia
  • 2008 Heribert-Späth-Prize for special training achievements in the craft

Craft policy goals

In particular in her function as a district master craftsman, Ms. Wahlbrink was also involved in craft policy. In addition to campaigns such as “Yes to the master”, a campaign against the abolition of the master craftsman's obligation, the focus of her work was particularly on the subject of training. Her aim was to bring young people closer to the skilled trades and to get them excited about them. In doing so, she defended dual training and repeatedly spoke out against the “academization of training”.
