The commemorative medal for the campaign in 1866 was donated by Grand Duke Nikolaus Friedrich Peter von Oldenburg on September 22nd, 1866 , “for each and every one of my troop corps , which during his participation in the now-ended glorious campaigns both through his good behavior against the enemy and through the Good leadership, proven in all circumstances, the Oldenburg name again acquired honor and respect, a lasting reminder of my special satisfaction and respect ... ".

The bronze medal shows the image of the founder on the front. All around the inscription NICOL. FRIEDR. PETER GRAND DUKE V. OLDENBURG . The year 1866 is enclosed by a laurel wreath on the reverse .

The ribbon is ponceau red with two dark blue side and two yellow edge stripes.
