Erkingül Imankozhoeva

Erkingül Bekbachaevna Imankozhoeva ( Kyrill . Эркингуль Бекбачаевна Иманкожоева ) (born October 19, 1966 ) is a Kyrgyz environmental activist and politician . After a cyanide accident in the Kumtor gold mine in Kyrgyzstan in 1998, she and her colleagues founded the local environmental organization Karek and in the following years obtained compensation for victims amounting to 3.7 million US dollars.

Since the parliamentary elections in 2010 she has been a member of the Kyrgyz Parliament for the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan .

The filmmaker Mirjam Leuze accompanied Erkingül Imankozhoeva and her colleagues for several years. The resulting documentary "Flowers of Freedom", which premiered at the Berlinale in February 2014 , made the story of the cyanide accident in Germany known to a wider audience and also shows Erkingül Imankozhoeva as a member of parliament.
