history

The church, or a predecessor, was first mentioned in a document in 1072. Until the Reformation it was consecrated to St. Medardus , the local patron of Lüdenscheid. In the 12th century, on the site of a Romanesque predecessor, a late Romanesque two-bay pillar basilica was built as the nave , the choir came from the Gothic period. After it had become dilapidated, it was demolished in 1822, but the still Romanesque tower shaft was retained. On March 26, 1826, the new nave , designed by the Werden abbey builder Engelbert Kleinhanz , was inaugurated . A design by the princely Lippe land builder Wilhelm Tappe , a Lüdenscheid sexton's son, was rejected in an expert report by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in 1823 .

The tower of the Erlöserkirche is probably the oldest preserved building in the city and dates back to the 11th century. To the north and east it shows typical Romanesque round arch friezes , which are now covered by the nave roof. The upper floor, which was originally open to the nave, served as a mansion for the landlord and as Michael's chapel in the manner of a “ruler's office” .

Both in 1920 and 2000 the bell system of the Erlöserkirche was renewed.

description

The church tower was only given the characteristic stepped hood, which still looks baroque, in 1785. It has a significant impact on the townscape of Lüdenscheid. The tower shaft is secured by 180 iron anchors and at the same time loosened up decoratively. The classical nave with apse is characterized by arched windows and pilasters that structure the facade . Inside there is a wooden vault and galleries. The pulpit altar presumably comes from Adolf von Vagedes , a pupil of Karl Friedrich Schinkel . The church has five bells.
