Erlanger is a small impact crater on the moon near the lunar north pole . Due to the location and shape of the crater, the floor of Erlanger is one of the places where it is believed possible that ice from cometary impacts can occur on the moon. For this reason, the crater was examined on ice with a combination of the mini-RF instruments on board the two probes Chandrayaan-1 and Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter .
The crater was named in 2009 by the IAU after Joseph Erlanger (1874-1965), an American physiologist .
