Echinocereus russanthus is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet russanthus is derived from the Latin word russus for 'reddish' and the Greek word anthos for 'blossom' and refers to the color of the flowers.

Echinocereus russanthus grows solitary or branched from the base. The upright, cylindrical shoots are 7.5 to 25 inches long and 5 to 7.5 inches in diameter. They are covered by the thorns. There are ten to 18 ribs that are clearly humped. The seven to twelve spreading central spines are red, cream-colored or brownish. They have a length of up to 3 centimeters. The 30 to 45 reddish to brownish radial spines are up to 1.8 centimeters long.

The short funnel-shaped flowers are light red to bright red. They often appear in clusters on the sides of the shoots and do not always open completely. The flowers are 2.5 to 3 centimeters long and reach the same diameter. The green, spherical fruits are heavily thorny.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinocereus russanthus is distributed in the United States in the Big Bend area in the south of the state of Texas and in the neighboring Mexican state of Chihuahua .

The first description by Del Less was published in 1969. Nomenclatory synonyms are Echinocereus chloranthus var. Russanthus (D.Weniger) Lamb. ex GDRowley (1974) and Echinocereus viridiflorus var. russanthus (D.Weniger) ADZimmerman (2004).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
