Ernest Maragall i Mira

Ernest Maragall i Mira (born January 5, 1943 in Barcelona ) is a Spanish politician ( ERC ) and temporarily Minister of Foreign Affairs, for institutional relations and transparency of the Autonomous Region of Catalonia . From July 2014 to December 2016 he was a member of the European Parliament for Spain.

Life and offices

Ernest Maragall is the brother of Pasqual Maragall , who was mayor of Barcelona from 1982 to 1997 and head of government of the autonomous community of Catalonia from 2003 to 2006.

Ernest was a member of the European Parliament until December 2016 . There he was a member of the Committee on Budgets , the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and a delegation to the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee. In the election to the Catalan parliament in December 2017 , Ernest was elected to the Catalan parliament at number 13 of the separatist ERC . From June to November 2018, Ernest Maragall was Conseller (Minister) of Foreign Affairs, for institutional relations and transparency in the cabinet of the regional government under Quim Torra .

On May 26, 2019, he ran as the ERC's lead candidate for the mayor's office of Barcelona in the local elections; the ERC achieved the best election result of all parties and electoral alliances with 21.3%, just ahead of Barcelona en Comú of the incumbent mayor Ada Colau with 20.7%; both parliamentary groups hold 10 of a total of 41 city councilors. In June 2019 he was defeated in the election against Colau, which was re-elected mayor with the support of the Socialists ( PSC ) and the faction of Manuel Valls , who tried to prevent the appointment of a separatist city administration under Maragall.
