The building ensemble consists of the main house with a rear building directly on the street, a cavalier house in the rear part of the property and an arcade on the left property boundary that connects the two houses. The courtyard between the buildings is taken up by a small baroque garden .

The main building has a mezzanine floor on a vaulted cellar, two upper floors and a partially developed attic. The house, built in the late Baroque style, has a historically red plastered facade. The main building, together with a new rear building, encloses a courtyard designed as an atrium with galleries on the upper floors . The courtyard, used as a baroque café, opens onto the garden and the cavalier's house with a winter garden.

The rococo- style cavalier's house, also known as the garden house, is plastered in pink, the decorative elements are set off in white. The attic with dormers is located above the two full floors . The main house with the rear building and the cavalier house are connected with a two-storey roofed arcade in half-timbered style, which was also used as a drying area, also called Trücke in Franconian.

The Ernestiner Hof has been named after the adjacent Ernestine Street since 1995, which in turn got its name from the Ernestine people in 1874 . The Ernestines were a dynasty of the Wettins who founded the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen in 1680 .

history

The main building directly on the street was built in 1767 by senior chamber councilor Martin Gottlieb Bauersachs as a residential building. It was given house number 199. The house was built on the vaulted cellar of the previous building and had a red plastered facade from the start. Initially, it had a full floor and a loft above the mezzanine floor. A few years later, the cavalier's house and the arcade were added to the rear border of the property.

After the death of Bauersachs in 1786, the heirs used the building from 1788 as a social building with salons , billiard room and pleasure garden. In the 19th century, the house, which was once again used for living, often changed hands, including the Lord Mayor Eduard Krell and the physician Carl Krell. In 1888 Franz Kirchner acquired the property, who rented the apartments mainly to musicians and visual artists. From 1892 to 1896 the clarinetist Richard Mühlfeld lived here, who hosted numerous well-known musicians and composers of his time. These included Johannes Brahms , Joseph Joachim , Fritz Steinbach and Eugen d'Albert . Even after Kirchner's death in 1900, mainly artists and court servants lived here.

In 1956 the Ernestiner Hof was placed under monument protection, the Kavaliershaus from the Meiningen district and the main building from the city. The first renovation measures began in 1980. After 1990, the Berlin couple Stein acquired the building complex and in 1995 had it converted into a hotel with a café in the Baroque style. The new rear building with hotel rooms, the atrium with the café and the newly designed garden, also in Baroque style, were built. The cavalier house was supplemented by dormer windows. In 2009 the Ernestiner Hof came to the “Meininger Baudenkmäler” foundation of hotelier Uwe Klein, who runs the Meininger hotel chain Hotels with Flair .
