Ernie Ross

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernie Ross (* 27. July 1942 ) is a Scottish politician of the Labor Party .

Political career

Labor MP Peter Doig , who had represented Dundee West constituency in the House of Commons since 1963 , did not run for the 1979 general election . As his successor, the Labor Party put on Ross, who ran for the first time in elections at the national level. With a share of the vote of 47.3%, Ross clearly prevailed against his three opponents and subsequently moved into the British House of Commons for the first time.

In the following elections in 1983 , 1987 , 1992 , 1997 and 2001 he held his mandate. At the 2005 general election Ross has not raced for more. His successor Jim McGovern held the mandate for the Labor Party.

Ross is described as a backbencher belonging to the left wing of the Labor Party. He campaigned for the expansion of relations with the Soviet Union and Cuba. In 1981 he was one of the MPs who nominated Tony Benn , the leader of the left wing, for the election of deputy party leader. As a member of a foreign affairs committee, he provided Foreign Minister Robin Cook with an unauthorized advance report on weapons in Sierra Leone. Although Ross apologized for the incident, he was suspended from parliament for ten days and expelled from committee.

A total of 4006 contributions by Ross are recorded in Parliament.
