Ernst Müller Bridge
The Ernst Müller Bridge was a pedestrian bridge over the root of the Wupper pre- dam of the Wuppertal dam in Hückeswagen . The bridge collapsed in June 2008.
The bridge over the impoundment of the Wupper River was built in 1985 and later named in honor of the councilor Ernst Müller, who campaigned for the development of the dam with hiking trails and the construction of the bridge. The three-hinged arch bridge was built using wood and in 1999 passed from the city of Hückeswagen to the possession of the Wupper Association .
In November 2006, during routine work, it was found that the bridge was in danger of collapsing due to wood rot . It was immediately closed to the public. An appraisal revealed that the bow ties were weathered on one side. The closure was regretted by the population, as popular circular routes were now interrupted and long detours had to be mastered for those seeking relaxation. After assuming liability by the city, a company attached to Wupper declared that it was ready to allow a route across its premises, so that the necessary detour could be significantly reduced.
In 2007 the decision was made to replace the Ernst Müller Bridge with a new bridge structure. Seven bidders took part in the tender with 23 bids, one of which was a flat steel bridge.
Two weeks before the start of the demolition work and the new construction, the Ernst Müller Bridge collapsed on the evening of June 24, 2008 due to the damage determined in the report. People were not harmed.
The successor bridge, a steel girder bridge, was built at the beginning of August 2008.
