Gustav Kraatz

Ernst Gustav Kraatz (born March 13, 1831 in Berlin ; † November 2, 1909 there ) was a German entomologist .

Kraatz visited the Köllnische grammar school and high school to the Gray Monastery in Berlin before he first the rights studied, but soon after the Zoology changed. In 1856 he received his doctorate in Jena with a coleopterological thesis . After several study trips abroad, he worked on the natural history of insects in Germany . His research mainly focused on Coleoptera (beetles) and published around 1400 publications. He was also a professor at the University of Berlin .

In 1856 Kraatz founded the Berlin Entomological Society, in 1881 the German Entomological Society , of which he was chairman for many years, and in 1886 the German National Entomological Museum .

His collection is in the Senckenberg German Entomological Institute .
