Ernst Hansen (painter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ernst Hansen (born September 26, 1906 in Bad Honnef , † February 22, 1987 in Bielefeld ) was a German painter and teacher at the Werkkunstschule Bielefeld .

Career

Having grown up in Gütersloh, Ernst Hansen began his professional career there, initially with an apprenticeship as a painter and then as a journeyman. He received his artistic training at the craft and applied arts school in Bielefeld from 1924 to 1927 in Karl Muggly's class . After three years of study, he worked as a freelance decorative painter in Chemnitz and Saarbrücken.

From October 1, 1933, Ernst Hansen was hired as a second permanent teacher alongside Karl Muggly as a specialist teacher in the applied painting class at the Bielefeld School of Crafts and Applied Arts . In 1940 Hansen was called up for military service and was released from captivity in 1946. Then he worked again as a subject teacher in the class for applied painting. In 1949 Ernst Hansen finally succeeded Muggly as head of the painting class, initially on a temporary basis from April 1, 1949, and then officially from February 1950. In 1964 Hansen became head of the applied painting group. At that time the school was already called Werkkunstschule Bielefeld . Ernst Hansen retired in June 1972 when his department was now part of the design department at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences .

Works

In addition to painting, Ernst Hansen's artistic interest was in working with a wide variety of materials such as glass, slate, rubber, carpet, and metal. Much of his work can be found in private collections. His estate is administered by the Bielefeld Historical Museum .

"The painter finds his real field of work in the service of architecture."

- Ernst Hansen (1957)

During the extensive construction work in the course of the reconstruction after the Second World War , Ernst Hansen received numerous commissions for the artistic design of public buildings such as schools and churches, but also residential buildings, since the early 1950s. Hansen was not only responsible for the design of these assignments, but also personally carried out the practical implementation for most of the assignments. As part of the funding for art in architecture, it was envisaged that at least 1 percent of the construction cost was planned for public works for works of art.

Even today there are still numerous well-preserved examples of his work from this period:

  • Apfelstraße housing estate in Bielefeld: sgraffiti over entrance doors (1951)
  • Three-story residential building, Hohes Feld in Bielefeld: Bay window design using mosaic technology (1952)
  • Carl Severing Vocational College in Bielefeld: Mosaic Floor (1955)
  • Kindermann Foundation in Bielefeld: Sgraffito (1955)
  • Market school in Bielefeld Brackwede: mural and sgraffito (1956)
  • Municipal youth hostel "Line 3" near Nordpark: wall mosaic (1957)
  • Johannesstift - Evangelical Hospital Bielefeld : Wall mosaic (1959)
  • Matthäuskirche in Bielefeld: window, altar, portal (1960)
  • Epiphany Church in Bielefeld Vilsendorf: window (1961)
  • Cemetery chapel in Bielefeld Altenhagen: stained glass window, crucifix (1965)
  • Former Oldentrup secondary school in Bielefeld (since 2015 Ernst Hansen School): Material collage (1967)
  • Housing estate Donauschwabenstrasse in Bielefeld: concrete sculpture (1971)

Hansen designed works of art on or in buildings in numerous other cities such as Duisburg, Münster or Husum.

Appreciation

Since January 2015, the municipal special needs school in the Oldentrup district of Bielefeld has been called Ernst-Hansen-Schule. This was created through the merger of the two special needs schools Tieplatzschule and Bonifatiusschule and has been located in the building of the former secondary school Oldentrup since October 2014, in whose cafeteria, inserted into the brick walls, you can find Hansen's large-scale collages "Kaleidoscopes" from 1967. The request to change the name came from the school conference on the grounds that Hansen had significantly influenced numerous public buildings and schools in the city with his art, so that he can be considered a worthy namesake of a Bielefeld school.
