Ernst Knippel

Ernst Wilhelm Knippel (born April 24, 1811 in Steinseiffen , district of Hirschberg ; † April 26, 1900 in Schmiedeberg , district of Hirschberg) was a German draftsman, graphic artist, illustrator, engraver and publisher. Copper engravings of Silesian landscapes in particular were part of his work.

Live and act

Ernst Knippel was born in 1811 as the son of a baker and had a brother named Carl Gottfried. After his father's death in 1827, Knippel moved to Schmiedeberg. From 1827 to 1832 he learned from the draftsman and copper engraver Friedrich August Tittel (1770–1836). In 1839 Knippel married Augusta Heidrich Tschirnhaus. In 1840 Knippel became the owner of a publishing house founded in 1810, which he acquired from Tittel's heirs. Carl Julius Rieden became his business partner. The Rieden & Knippel publishing house published lithographs , among other things . Around 80 lithographs of Upper Silesian industrial sites were also created. Knippel produced the first panorama of the then village and today's city of Katowice . After Rieden's death in 1858, Knippel managed the publishing house alone. In the 1870s and 1880s, the publisher also produced postcards.

Ernst Knippel was made an honorary citizen of the town of Schmiedeberg while he was still alive. Knippel died in Schmiedeberg in 1900. His tomb has not been preserved. His son Ludwig Knippel took over the publishing house and was followed in 1908 by the lithographer W. Müller.
