Ernst Schönhals

Ernst Schönhals (born February 3, 1909 in Merlau im Vogelsberg ; † May 29, 1993 in Gießen ) was a German soil scientist and Quaternary researcher .

Life and career

After graduating from high school, Ernst Schönhals studied geology at the University of Giessen . There he was in 1936 when Walther mallet with a thesis on the geology of the Wetterau to Dr. phil. PhD. This was followed by activities in soil estimation and in the Prussian Geological State Institute (1938/39). In 1947 he went to the newly created Hessian State Office for Soil Research in Wiesbaden and later to the Federal Office for Soil Research in Hanover as a soil scientist . On March 25, 1965, he was appointed full professor in the Faculty of Agriculture at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen . As the successor to Hans Kuron at the Chair of Soil Science, he headed the Section (later the Institute for) Soil Science and Soil Conservation until his retirement in 1984.

From 1965–66 he was first chairman, 1967–68 second chairman of the German Quaternary Association (DEUQUA), from 1968 to 1978 editor of the association organ Ice Age and Present . In 1974 he was Vice President of the International Quaternary Association ( INQUA ).

Scientific work

Ernst Schönhals was particularly concerned with the formation of loess and the loess stratigraphy of the Würm glacial period . He was the first to describe the loose brown earths found in the Vogelsberg .
