Ernst Schmidt (born March 25, 1905 in Nuremberg ; † December 22, 1993 ibid) was a German engine and motorcycle designer.

Life

After his apprenticeship at MAN , Schmidt studied mechanical engineering at the Technikum in Nuremberg from 1923 to 1926 . After stops in Stein and Berlin, Ernst Schmidt began his career at Zündapp in Nuremberg in 1929 . He was the chief designer there as early as 1936. During this time he was responsible for the construction of the Zündapp KS 750 and KS 500 motorcycle models as well as an aircraft engine with the designation RLM 9-092 AO .

In 1939 Schmidt switched to NSU and worked on the Kettenkrad .

After the end of the war, Schmidt was again chief designer at Zündapp in Nuremberg from 1945 and developed the DB 202 . However, his most important project was the development of the Zündapp KS 601 , which was later known as the Green Elephant .

Ernst Schmidt also developed the successful, long-built Bella scooter and the “B 250” motorcycle prototype with a boxer engine, which did not go into series production. After Zündapp had to sell the Nuremberg plant in 1958 and relocated the company's headquarters to Munich, he started a position at MAN in Nuremberg. There he worked successfully on the development of multi-fuel engines . Ernst Schmidt retired as chief engineer in 1970.
