The Zündapp Bella is a motor scooter that the Zündapp -Werke GmbH built from 1953 to 1964 in Nuremberg and Munich . Over 130,000 of these scooters were produced during the entire construction period. In formal terms, the Bella is based on the Italian Moto Parilla scooter that Zündapp originally wanted to manufacture under license.

engine and gears

The Bella's 1-cylinder two-stroke engine largely corresponds to the Zundapp DB 204 motorcycle engine with cross-flow flushing, but the displacement was initially only 147 cm³. Initially, the engine was started with a kick starter; From 1955 there was an electric starter that made it necessary to have a battery box on the fairing under the handlebars because a second 6 V battery now had to be accommodated due to the on-board voltage that was increased to 12 volts. Before that, the battery was housed in a box below the rear light. The starter carburettors introduced at the same time (Bing slide-in models 1 / ...) made operation even easier. While the float chamber had to be flooded with the "swab" for a cold start on the previous two-slide carburetors (Bing 2 / ...) and the air slide had to be lowered with a cable, it was now sufficient to operate a small lever on the starter device, which was attached to the handlebar.

The engine was cooled by the airstream. For this purpose, the front fender was shaped in such a way that the air was directed onto the cylinder through a center tunnel, which restricted the passage that is common with scooters. She got back outside through a few slits behind the bench. It was important not to cover these slots with clothing or luggage.

In 1954 the Bella (model R 200 with kick starter) appeared with a 198 cm³ engine, reverse flush and 10 hp, the R 200 is also the most popular Bella type and the 200 is the most common engine size of all Bella scooters. The last 200 model R 204, released in 1958, has an engine with an inclined cylinder - like the analog motorcycle model 200S / 201S - and an output of 12 hp.

A 174 cc engine was only installed around 2000 times.

The four-speed draw-wedge transmission comes from the then Zündapp two-stroke motorcycles of this displacement class, but is not shifted on the left, but with a rocker switch on the right (the foot brake is on the left). The power is transmitted to the rear wheel via a chain running in the closed chain case.

Framework and structure

All versions of the Zündapp Bella have a tubular bridge frame and the full fairing typical of scooters. Deviating from the general concept are the relatively large 12 "wheels and a large air scoop in the footwell, which makes it difficult to get through, but provides the engine with enough cooling air without a fan. The front fender is also used to guide the cooling air, the cooling air warmed by the engine is under the seats forwarded and exits there.

The Bella had a rear swing arm with hydraulic shock absorber from the start . In the first models (R 150, R 151 and R 200) the front wheel was guided by an undamped telescopic fork with 80 mm suspension travel, which was replaced in 1956 by a long-arm swing arm with 143 mm suspension travel, which was common at the time. This swing arm only has one spring strut on the left-hand side, also with hydraulic damping, and was also available for the R 151 at an additional cost.

The tank of the Bella is located under the seats or the optionally available double bench seat, which can be folded to the side for refueling. As an alternative to the wheel cutouts indicated in the side panels with decorative horizontal grooves, decorative grilles were available that could be folded out as luggage supports. A flap in each of the side panels on the left and right made the carburetor - and, in a partial series, the tool kit - accessible and almost all Bellas had a small, grille-covered opening in front of the driver's seat through which the spark plug could be changed.

Some types of the Bella scooter were suitable for driving in a trailer with a special sidecar.

Models

The first model was the Bella R 150 (1953–1955), the last the Bella R 204 (1958–1964). The Bella R 200 achieved the highest sales figure with 26,900 units.

  • Bella 175 S (1961 to 1964)

Export model Suburbanette 150 : From 1953 to 1955 370 “Suburbanette” (German: “small suburban woman”) were produced as variants of the Bella R 150 for export to the USA, optionally with telescopic fork or front wheel swing arm. The changes were agreed with the importer in the USA, Joe Berliner, whereas the Bella models were intended as "travel scooters" for the German market. The Suburbanette had wider and higher handlebars, a double seat bench and was less heavily clad, so that the weight was reduced by 24 kg in favor of a specified maximum speed of 5 km / h higher. After that, some near-series Bella models were exported to the USA, but with a kick starter instead of a starter, as indicated by a “K” attached to the type designation.

  2. According to R. Scharfenberg, these pannier racks were standard on all 200 models and on the R 150 and R 151; For cost reasons, they were omitted on the R 153 and R 154, which also had simplified running boards.
  3. In the first series of the type R 150, the spark plug was located at the rear in the direction of travel, near the carburettor, and was difficult to access through the side flaps. From chassis number 5001, the spark plug was in the front and was now easier to reach through the barred opening mentioned. Both versions of the cylinder head had cooling fins arranged in parallel, the fan-shaped cylinder head came later - according to R. Scharfenberg, p. 21 and photo p. 14.
  4. According to R. Scharfenberg, production of the R 204 with the 12.3 HP engine from the motorcycle model "200 S" with the cylinder inclined forward at an angle was phased out in 1962; With the successor type "bella 200", the compression was increased to 7.5: 1 and the power was increased to 13.4 HP at the same speed, a modified intake silencer was used. "Bella 175 S" and "bella 200" were withdrawn from the range in 1964.
