The Zündapp GTS 50 is a Mokick from Zündapp and was built from 1972 to 1984 in different versions. The engine requires a 1:50 oil-petrol mixture, the consumption is around 3 liters per 100 km. The design-related maximum speed is 40 km / h according to the approval regulations. The engines of the older models were air-cooled. The 2-stroke engine developed 2.9 - 3.0 HP at 5000 min −1 . From 1984 the GTS was equipped with a water-cooled engine. The abbreviation GTS stands for Gussrahmen-Touring-Sport.
There are several models of the GTS 50:
- 517: 1972-1976, 2.9 hp, 40 km / h, four-speed gearbox, air-cooled
- 529: 1976-1983, 49.9 cm³, 2.9 PS, 40 km / h, four or five-speed gearbox, air-cooled
- 540: 1984, 49.9 cm³, 3.0 HP, 40 km / h, five-speed gearbox, water-cooled and front disc brake
A 5-speed gearbox could be ordered for models built after 1978 (special 5-speed model). All other GTS 50 models had a 4-speed gearbox. Until 1983, the Zündapp works relied on a so-called draw-key gearbox , which had an idle between each gear, which resulted in uncomfortably long shift travel. In the last model, type 540, a claw- type gearbox with particularly short shift travel was installed from 1984 . This model was only available as a 5-speed version. The type 540 was only manufactured for half a year and is therefore a particularly rare collector's item.
Since the GTS was virtually identical to the KS small motorcycle, it became (like many comparable small motorcycles from German production) a popular tuning object and was gladly "improved" with its special components (exhaust, cylinder), which resulted in 7 hp at 10,000 rpm and 90 km / h were possible. This means that “souped-up” motorcycles often had a higher performance than the light motorcycles with 80 cm³ that were later introduced.
