The KS 175 is a motorcycle of Zündapp and was built from 1977 to 1982 in the versions 521-50 and 521-51. A water-cooled 2-stroke engine with 163 cm³ and an output of 13 kW = 17 hp serves as the drive .

Emergence

At the beginning of the 1970s, there was a clear trend in Germany towards motorcycles with larger displacement. Machines with 250 cm³ were particularly in demand. In 1973 there was a real boom with 11,000 new registrations among the 250 cc, in which Zündapp also wanted to participate. Therefore, in 1973, the company's boss Neumeyer commissioned the development of a 250 cm³ and a 350 cm³ model. For cost reasons, only the larger model was later developed as the KS 350.

At the same time, the existing KS 125 was to be revised to become the KS 175 in order to offer more driving comfort with a larger displacement with less environmental pollution. For this purpose, the bore of the motor was increased from 54 mm to 62 mm and the motor was provided with a noise-reducing water cooling system, as Zündapp had already successfully introduced a few years earlier in the KS 50 watercooled (517-52). Both the KS 175 and the KS 350 with two-cylinder engine were presented at the IFMA in Cologne in 1976 . Despite greater interest in the KS 350, the Zündapp management decided not to let the KS 350 go into series production because of the high investment requirements. In contrast, the KS 175 could be put into production with comparatively little effort.

The first version 521-50 of the KS 175 came on the market in 1977 and was only available in metallic green. The double-loop tubular frame was adopted almost unchanged from the KS 125. The purchase price of this first model was DM 3,880, which was above the class average.

In 1979 the KS 175 was fundamentally revised and given the type designation 521-51. Externally, the motorcycle could be distinguished from the previous version by a spoiler seat bench and a new instrument panel with rectangular headlights; it was now offered in the colors racing red and strato silver. Instead of a self-produced telescopic fork, there was a model by Marzocchi . The front brake that Grimeca had supplied with the 521-50 now came from Brembo . VDO's instruments have also been modernized. Improvements were also made to the engine. The price increased to DM 4,595 by the end of production in 1982.

Two years later, the company Zündapp had to file for bankruptcy and since no successor model was developed, the KS 175 remained the last production motorcycle from Zündapp.

engine

The KS 175 has a single-cylinder two-stroke engine , type 288-01, which is interlocked with the gearbox. The displacement of 163 cm³ results from a bore of 62 mm with a stroke of 54 mm. With a compression of 7.8: 1 at 7400 revolutions per minute, the engine delivers 13 kW. The maximum torque of 17.6 Nm is reached at 7000 rpm. The mixture lubrication uses 2% oil (ratio 50: 1).

The cooling is designed as a thermosiphon cooling system, so it does not require a pump. The water cooling should make the KS 175 quieter than the previous model KS 125.

The carburetor is a Mikuni SE VM 28-200A . The intake air is cleaned by a paper air filter under the seat.

Power transmission

Helical- toothed spur gears serve as the primary drive . The power separates a cable-operated six-plate clutch in an oil bath. The foot-operated draw key gear has 5 gears. Its long shift travel makes changing gears a little uncomfortable.

A chain with a chain pitch of 1/2 ″ × 5/16 ″ and 114 links transmits the power to the rear wheel, the ratio between gearbox and rear wheel is 17:44 for the 521-50 and 17:43 for the 521-51.

The engine is started with a kick starter , which is mounted concentrically with the gearshift lever.

Frame, landing gear and brakes

The double-loop tubular frame of the KS 175, which has proven itself in off-road sports , was largely taken over from the previous model, the KS 125. The front wheel has a hydraulically damped telescopic fork , cushioned by coil springs . The rear wheel is mounted on a tubular long swing arm and is supported by three-way adjustable, hydraulically damped spring-damper units .

After a test, the chassis of the KS 175 was praised as being stable and cornering.

A 2.75 "tire is mounted on the front of the 18" aluminum die-cast wheels of the KS 175, the size 3.25 "is used on the rear wheel. The motorcycle is decelerated on the front wheel by a hydraulically operated disc brake with a disc diameter of 260 mm (521-50), later 280 mm (521-51). A drum brake with a diameter of 160 mm is installed in the rear wheel and is operated by a pull rod.

Electrical system

The KS 175 is equipped with a contactless, 6 volt 35/30 watt magneto magneto from Bosch . The 35-watt armature circuit is used to directly supply the main headlight, which is equipped with a 35-watt Bilux bulb. Via the second circuit of the generator with 30 watts of power is an electronic 6 volt charge controller of the lead storage battery of 12  ampere-hour capacity (type 6N11A-1B) is loaded. At the same time, the brake light is also supplied with AC voltage via this circuit . The taillight, flashing system, horn and cockpit lighting are supplied with electrical energy via the lead accumulator .

The electrical system of KS 175 is considered a weak point in construction:

  • Headlights and brake lights only work when the engine is running. In addition, the luminosity depends on the engine speed.
  • Due to the low nominal power of the generator, the lead accumulator can also discharge while driving.
  • By management and contact resistance leads to considerable voltage drop in the 6-volt power, so that the load is supplied with a lower voltage. This applies in particular to the flasher system, in which the 6 volt and 21 watt lamps used due to the approval have a significantly excessive power requirement. An electronic flasher unit and light bulbs or light-emitting diodes with lower power consumption can help .

distribution

The KS 175 sold rather slowly due to its high price compared to other motorcycles in the same performance class. Another reason was that at that time the market for motorcycles tended more towards the newly created 27 hp class. Therefore, only around 1000 of the first model variant were brought onto the market each year.

In Germany, according to the registration statistics of the Federal Motor Transport Authority, 321 motorcycles were registered in 2019, most of them in the state of Bavaria .
